What I miss from the back light function is the possibility to activate the always-on mode directly by pressing the buttons. When it matters: Bright rooms; bright objects in SDR video. It's not so easy for me to read submenu titles as they are small but that's because of my vision problem. You may have to replace the inverter.
I can't really speculate on trying to imagine what other peoples eyes might or might not be like. That center light might be the reason they haven't made it brighter as it could look even stranger.
